Hello 1165,

Happy Snow Day?

If you’re stuck indoors, I thought why not send out your work for WEEK 3. As in NEXT class not this coming Monday which is week 2. I have to be clear this is for WEEK 3’s class. WEEK 3. Which is in 2+ weeks.

To give you a hint on why I’m being SO specific: there will be ONE or more students who do this assignment and not week 2. Please don’t be that person. Please. Do. Not. Be. That. Person. Oh man – you’re gonna be that person….

Readings from Rodman’s Mass Media: Chapters 3 (Books), Chapter 4 (newspapers)

WEEK 3 – Blog work due before 12pm, Monday, Feb 22nd

Blog Reading: Satire’s Brew – Lecture ONE: America’s Jester, pages Xi-58 – MANDATORY.

Assignment – Using Satire’s Brew, watch the videos below, answer these questions and explore other ideas on your own.

  1. Have you watched The Daily Show before? What do you think of Jon Stewart? What ONE word would you use to describe him. Why did you use that word?
  2. Jon Stewart has been called a journalist and/or a comedian, which do you think he is? Why?
  3. Do the segments/stories below follow the rules discussed in the book? How so? Give examples – use the book and the videos.
  4. Was Stewart being unfair or too harsh to CNBC and Jim Cramer? Marco Rubio?
  5. What are your reactions to the videos/segments. Expand on your own if you need to.
  6. Word Count: 750-1000 words

Videos to Watch: There are a bunch (like a bunch) here but all VERY enjoyable. Some of my personal favorites and I just re-watched all of them so the links work.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart vs. Jim Cramer
Stewart’s “Biggest” Moment! Follow a week of TDS as they take on big media and the financial media “experts” at CNBC:

March 10 2009
March 11 2009
March 12 2009
The Extended Interviews with Jim Cramer! Audio & Video are off sync just a bit but that’s the website.
Part 1:
Part 2:
Part 3:
Jon Stewart vs. Marco Rubio – 2012
Let’s see how the future Republican candidate for President discusses policy, facts, and other hilarious things with JS.
Students: I know it’s a lot of viewing/work but I’m giving you 2+ weeks notice and a head’s up on it.
Prepare and manage your time, and you should be fine!
Just don’t leave it to the night before! Good luck with the work and enjoy it!
I sincerely hope you understand when this work is due! Week 3, Monday 2/22 by 12pm.
Best, and see you on Monday!

  1. Hi Professor Dunphy,

How many words over the word limit are we permitted, if any?

I think I may be going over 500 words for blog post 1 but I can shorten it if you prefer it to be kept strictly within the limit. Thank you,

    Rachele Cipriano
