Hello 1165 Mass Media,

Welcome to the first blog post in the Spring 2017 semester!

There is a ton of information in here so please read the entire post.

Hope you enjoyed the first class, only 13 more to go, right? Right. Good

In this blog you will receive all the information for the week and exactly what assignment is due. This blog supersedes the syllabus and assignment document because this is the most to date.

The Syllabus is here – please keep it handy: altspring-17-mm-wednesday-syllabus

I added Satire’s Brew: Mass Media and Coffee Beans to the required reading list. Please follow the proper instructions (in syllabus) and purchase the book through Cognella’s website. If there are issues, let me know.

The in-class TA is Kayla: KSutherland.TA@gmail.com — she can help with any questions.

The Blog Assignment sheet is here: altspring17-mm-blog-assignment

I changed the blog assignment to give you less and spread it out over the semester, but added/subtracted some stuff. Kayla, Alexis, and Larissa have worked with Satire’s Brew, so I think this will be advantage to you.

The assignment document is subject to change again.

Some Info On The TA:

Kayla, Alexis, Larissa sent out their welcome email, sign up for your own wordpress blog to post your first assignment: see below for details.

If you haven’t heard from the TA by Friday 12:30pm email Kayla at – KSutherland.TA@gmail.com

My TAs are current students, with jobs, and everything else – they will respond to your inquiry as fast as they can but please be patient. Please show them the same respect you would show your professors.

The TAs will respond to blogs by certain dates/times so don’t worry about that. They are here to GUIDE and HELP but there is a limit on what they can/will do.

My advice: Listen to them – they all have done well in my classes throughout the years.

Readings for Next Week:

Please read Rodman’s Mass Media in a Changing World Chapters 1 & 2. Please bring the book to class.

Your First Blog Assignment: due Wednesday Feb 8th BEFORE 12:00pm.

First, take a look at the syllabus (and previous blog post) to view previous students’ work. They all did quite well, so this will help you for sure.

Second, there are readings and a response, so manage your time wisely.

OK! We’re going to jump right in using Chapter 2’s Media Impact. Read the following THREE articles: They’re a bit long but worth it and necessary.

Answer the following questions:

– What is your immediate reaction to these articles? What stood out to you?

– Do you think the term “fake news” is accurate? Why or why not. What word would you use in its place?

– Should Facebook or other sites be held to a journalistic standard? What standard do you think that should be? Should people be held to a standard?

– Use Rodman’s Chapter 2: Media Impact in your response….

Word Count: 500-1500 words

That’s it!

I know that’s a lot of info but it’ll be fine.

Have a great semester, good luck, and see you next week!

Professor Dunphy
